Chapter 21

Evalina drew her weapon as she rounded the first corner of the tower and headed for the second.

“Eva!”

Ben’s angry bellow echoed through the woods, making her cringe. She’d known he wouldn’t be happy, but just for once, she wished the man would do as he was told and shut up. Moving as silently as possible, she focused on her goal in hopes of still maintaining some element of surprise.

Back to the wall at the next corner, she darted a look around the stone wall, spotted her quarry, and executed a spin that planted her feet as she leveled her Beretta.

“Do not move.”

The man standing by the opposite corner froze at the sound of her low command. His back was to her, but with his wavy dark hair and tall build, she had a good idea of his identity.

“Put your hands on the wall, above your head,” she ordered, moving closer, gun still extended. When he complied, she stepped up behind him, braced her gun muzzle against the middle of his back and nudged his legs apart. “You even think about moving and I will shoot you.”

He remained silent and still while she patted him down and confiscated a nine millimeter Glock. She did a quick one hand check to see it was loaded before securing it in the back waistband of her jeans. The cell phone in his jacket pocket she transferred to hers.

More shouting came from the other side of the tower. The guy turned his head slightly and one glimpse confirmed her first suspicion.

“Someone’s not happy with you,” he said, a hint of a smirk on his lips.

“Sì. Story of my life with that one.” Satisfied he wasn’t carrying any more weapons, Evalina backed up. “Now turn around, Nicholas Marshall. Nice and slow.”

He faced her, surprise evident in his green eyes. “You know who I am?”

“I am Polizia di Stato. After that stunt you and your sister pulled in Milan, of course I know who you are.” She jerked her head to the side. “Move. Ben will want to speak with you.”

Ben’s cursing came to an abrupt halt when Marshall walked into view. She followed, and he immediately turned his furious gaze on her.

“You ever fucking handcuff me again, woman, and I’ll—”

“What?” she challenged. Withdrawing the handcuff key from her pocket, she then propped her hand on her hip and raised her eyebrows. “What will you do, Benjamin?”

This time, he wisely shut up until she tossed him the key. Catching it one-handed, he totally ignored their uninvited guest and turned to work the locks around his wrists. “Why the hell did you do this?”

“To keep you out of the way.”

The moment he’d freed himself, he rounded on her. “I could’ve helped.”

“Exactly what I did not want.”

His frown deepened. “Because you don’t trust me?”

“That, and you have a propensity to play hero.” Nice in a romantic novel, but not always so much in real life.

“If you’d have told me what you were doing—”

“I didn’t have time. You’d have argued and followed me and—” She lifted a hand when he started to shake his head.
